A Paradigm Shift
There is a need for a paradigm shift among professionals who come into contact with young women who are being trafficked. Many health care workers, child welfare workers, and shelter staff believe that these girls have “chosen” to become involved in this life and feel they should be punished. Redefining Refuge recognizes that it is imperative to view those affected by Sex Trafficking as victims, and more importantly survivors, instead of criminals or prostitutes. This simple recognition and initial interaction is instrumental in the recovery process of these woman and children. Being met with an empathetic and understanding professional is vital in providing an alternative option other than returning to “the life.”
